How To Create Your Own Kindle Lock Screen From an Unlikely Reader
Did I stay up way too late trying to figure out how to set my kindle lock screen to be my own design? Yes, yes I did, but it was worth it because it makes me smile every time I look at my kindle now.
Set Up To Fail
My parents didn’t really read to me growing up. My mom might of here and there when I asked her to. There are vague memories of me asking her to read the Berenstain Bears to me, specifically the one about junk food.
Looking back, there are so many things wrong with that book series and my favorite book about junk food and nutrition is so problematic no wonder we have a generation of disordered eating.
I use to get new books delivered through a book program every month and would look forward to the pictures in them. After someone read the books to me I’d try to memorize them to tell the stories to myself again.
Basically I didn’t grow up encouraged to read by anyone. Maybe seeing my sister read her Sweet Valley High series while eating a bag of Ruffle’s Sour Cream and Cheddar chips which she’d never share with me traumatized me towards books. Maybe when I was curious about her books, I was made to feel dumb and unworthy.
Or it could be how my dad would read the newspaper sipping his tea puffing on his Kent cigarette acting the part of an important man that rubbed me the wrong way when it came to reading.
ESL Group
I remember being pulled out of class around 3rd grade during reading groups to go to a special small group. Later I would realize this was ESL (English as a Second Language). Mind you I was the only non white kid in the group.
Here’s the thing, I wasn’t bad at reading, I was bored. I daydreamed a lot at school and had trouble focusing. My spelling was pretty awful, but my reading comprehension wasn’t an issue. Yet here I was being pulled away every day to be even more bored during reading groups.
Because English was my second language they automatically sent me to this small group assuming my reading needed work. What it ended up doing was making me feel stupid. It made me try even less.
My home life at the time was utter chaos. School was time away from the chaos, but I didn’t know how to truly socialize or be around others because I was keeping secrets. Sleep was never consistent and I was always in a state of fight or flight.
What I needed at the time was a therapist or CPS, but no they sent me to ESL which delayed my love for reading even more.
Love for Fiction
Eventually I told my mom how I hated ESL and to her credit, she called the school and had me taken out.
But honestly I was behind because I had been bored for so long. Eventually I discovered books I enjoyed specifically fiction and fantasy. My reading comprehensions continued to improve especially as I started reading scripts.
One of my favorite things to do is cuddle up with a good book and read for hours undisturbed. It’s an escape for me and always will be. Books helped me through all of the toughest moments of life.
ACOTAR and TOG series by Sarah J. Maas helped me all through 2016 while visiting my mom at the hospital, skilled nursing, and later during her passing in 2017.
